I mentioned almost a year ago that I wanted this blog to be more than just my work and writing. A lot of dark television shows have come up and been popular as of late, and I am in love with the vast majority of them. I haven’t been keeping up as well as I’d like (either with watching, or writing about them) but perhaps this summer can be about the elegant darkness.
Here I’m just going to post a quick ‘why I love Hannibal’ post, and then perhaps get into more detailed episode discussion about it, Penny Dreadful, Salem, and similar shows. The first season of True Blood might count too, or just the parts with Skarsgard. Dexter works- again, first few seasons.
But yes. I *love* Hannibal. It makes gore into an art form, and unlike things like Saw which seem to glorify pain, it expresses it as a terrible and yet (to some people) inevitable thing. Bryan Fuller is an insane genius, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Have you watched a nature show lately? A wolf or lion has no care at all for the animal it starts eating while the herbivore is still alive. There is no empathy between predator and prey. Hannibal is Satan, a twisted powerful dark predator of humanity that is, at most, curious about us and at worst disgusted.
I mean, it’s horrible, but that’s the point! And somehow we’re rooting for him between making snide cannibal jokes and references to dinner.
